The Boxer
So you want to own a Boxer???
Square-jawed and muscular, the Boxer is the George Clooney of the dog world, a hunk with a sense of humor and an underlying sweetness.
Devotees of the Boxer need to be fit to stand up to their charges: a gentle, meek Boxer does not exist, extrovert and energetic are two adjectives that spring to mind when the breed is mentioned, along with loyal and fun loving. Once converted to the Boxer, owners never give up the breed.
Home for the Boxer is Germany and behind the breed are believed to be dogs such as the Great Dane and the Bulldog. It is thought that his name may have come from a corruption of the German word beisser, the Boxer being a refined version of the Bullenbeisser, meaning 'Bull Biter'. The breed has been it's present form since 1800s and in America (though not in the UK), it has it's ears cropped.
The Boxer is a natural guard dog and wary of strangers, he is intelligent and obedient. He will enter into the most riotous of Family games and yet can be extremely gentle with the younger Family members. Hardy and full of stamina, his idea of a country walk is to get as wet and as muddy as possible, but the shortness of his coat makes cleaning easy.
A good trencherman, he is rarely finicky or faddy. Truly a delightful breed, he is not quick to pick a fight but ready to prove that his slightly pugnacious face with its upturned chin can be backed to the hilt.
Over the centuries these dogs were selectively bred to become guards and search and rescue dogs. Arguably, the working group consists of some of the most heroic canines in the world, aiding humans in many walks of life, including the Boxer, Great Dane and St. Bernard. This group consists of the real specialists in their field who excel in their line of work.
